About Doctor Powell

I am passionate about Health and Healing.  I grew up on the east coast, playing in the farms and forests.  I graduated Suma Cum Laude from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science degree in Forest and Wildlife Biology.  I worked as a forest and wildlife biologist and environmental educator for several years.  I then discovered that there was a way to apply my knowledge of nature to medicine and healing.

I returned to school and received a 4 year post graduate medical degree in Naturopathic Medicine from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland Oregon.  My education included all the basic science, anatomy, and medical classes that a medical doctor would take as well as training in the use of pharmaceutical medicines, and minor surgery, however in my education a different philosophy was taught as well as many, many tools of alternative medicine.

The Philosophy of Naturopathic Medicine has at its core treating the individual not the disease.  It may sound like a subtle distinction but it makes a tremendous difference in treatment.  Along with conventional western treatment methods and training in oncology, geriatrics, pediatrics, gynecology etc., I have an extensive education in western herbal medicine, homeopathy, chiropractic type bone manipulation, IV therapy, flower remedies, massage, physical therapy, counseling, nutrition and many others.  I am certainly not expert in all these modalities, rather I have the knowledge and experience to discern when one of them is appropriate and refer if it is not a specialty of mine.

When not working with patients I enjoy spending time outdoors, and with family, keeping my own self healthy by practicing what I preach.  I have always enjoyed challenge in my work and in my play, it is my passion to apply my knowledge and resources to help others find solutions for their health care needs.
