About Doctor Powell
I am passionate about Health and Healing. I grew up on the east coast, playing in the farms and forests. I graduated Suma Cum Laude from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science degree in Forest and Wildlife Biology. I worked as a forest and wildlife biologist and environmental educator for several years. I then discovered that there was a way to apply my knowledge of nature to medicine and healing. I did not realize it at the time but the skills I learned in undergrad that I use most today were in the evaluation of scientific literature. How to build a good research study, and how to evaluate research. I use those skills every day to help people improve their health.
I returned to school and received a 4 year post graduate medical degree in Naturopathic Medicine from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland Oregon. My education included all the basic science, anatomy, and medical classes that a medical doctor would take as well as training in the use of pharmaceutical medicines, and minor surgery. However, in my education a different philosophy was taught as well as many, many tools of alternative medicine.
The Philosophy of Naturopathic Medicine has at its core treating the individual not the disease. It may sound like a subtle distinction but it makes a tremendous difference in treatment. Along with conventional western treatment methods and training in oncology, geriatrics, pediatrics, gynecology etc., I have an extensive education in western herbal medicine, homeopathy, chiropractic type bone manipulation, IV therapy, flower remedies, massage, physical therapy, counseling, nutrition and many others. I have the knowledge and experience to discern which modalities are most likely to help you. If it is not a specialty of mine I can help you find someone.
I love reading, researching, and learning new things about health. I enjoy spending time outdoors, and with family, keeping my own self healthy by practicing what I preach. I have always enjoyed challenge in my work and in my play, it is my passion to apply my knowledge and resources to help others find solutions for their health care needs.
